Australia: Prime Minister Announces $100 million for Domestic Violence Prevention and Victim Services
Australia’s new prime minister has pledged $100 million for domestic violence programs in Australia, including coordinated frontline services for victims and training for police, social service workers and health care workers. Funding will also support domestic violence prevention in indigenous communities. According to official government data, Australian police respond to nearly 240,000 domestic violence incidents each year. Australian advocates supported the prime minister's announcement, but crticized the lack of funding for women's shelters and legal aid.
